Before she could move, he stood up and turned to face her, his expression soft now, almost friendly. She hesitated, momentarily confused. Maybe she was wrong. Maybe he wasn’t angry.

“Hi,” he called.

She sputtered a greeting in return, but there was still something about him that made her nervous. Something….

Out of her peripheral vision, she caught sight of a white patch on the ground. Thinking maybe it was his hiking gear, she looked beyond him, to the spot where he’d been crouching just moments before, and felt the bite of cold winter air pierce her lungs as she gasped in alarm. A pair of bare legs was sticking out of the midst of the palmetto patch, lifeless and still. She stared for what seemed like an eternity, her brain barely grasping what she was seeing. She was having trouble registering it, putting it all together in her head, but when the reality finally hit, her entire body began to tremble. She lifted her eyes back to his face, searching, hoping she was wrong.

He smiled, and the blood froze in her veins.

He stared at the hiker. The fear literally boiled off her, so powerfully alluring that he could practically smell it. She’d seen the body. There was no question. He had no choice now but to kill her. Not a bad bargain as far as he was concerned.

She stood there staring, frozen by her own fear. He’d seen the look a dozen times before, and he knew what it meant. She was immobilized by terror, confused, searching for a way out, but not quite comprehending.

He glanced around, made sure that she was alone, and his smile broadened.

Suzanne’s heart began to race, and the sound of her own blood throbbing through her ears made it almost impossible to hear anything else. There was a pain in her chest, a squeezing, suffocating sort of pain. Her body was providing her with the perfect burst of adrenaline to flee, but she couldn’t seem to make her feet move. All she could do was stand there and stare at him in abject terror, her mind cataloging every detail of his face. He was so handsome, so clean-cut. So benign. He hardly looked like what she thought a killer should.

She couldn’t seem to tear her gaze away from his, couldn’t seem to do much of anything at all. God, why couldn’t she run? Why was she just standing there like an empty-headed fool when she knew she should run–must run! Yet, the futility of even making an attempt…. What was the point in giving in to such a conditioned response when she knew it was hopeless, utterly hopeless?

He took a step toward her. She gave a little whimpering gasp and stumbled backwards. He laughed, a lethal whisper of sound, and took another step forward. His movements were slow, self-assured, like he knew he couldn’t possibly lose. A second later, she heard an odd scream burst through the forest, echoing off the surrounding trees. She was so terrified that it took her a moment before she realized the scream had been her own. She was so intent on getting out of there, getting away. Dammit, there had to be a chance. Dear God, please give me a chance, she mentally screamed.

She twisted around, prepared to run, felt her booted foot snag on something. A damn tree root! Her arms flailed the air for one terrifying moment, and then she managed to right herself again. She lunged forward, began a stumbling flight back the way she’d come, blindly tearing through the woods, dodging the tree branches that slapped at her body and pulled at her hair as she passed.

Her breath became a ragged wheeze. Her lungs felt like they would burst. And the whole time her legs were pumping hard to get her out of danger, she knew…she was never going to make it. She would never waste another second resenting her ex-husband. Would never again enjoy the cool crisp country air, the wisps of white clouds in an otherwise clear blue sky. She would never be thrilled at catching sight of a meteor on a dark night, never feel the touch of a man’s fingers caressing her face. She was going to die. This man was going to kill her. She knew that as surely as she knew the sun was still shining.

She was already losing ground. Her legs burned from the effort, the strain she was forcing on them. She’d always been an athletic person, had always been in good shape, but she knew she couldn’t run forever. Not at top speed. Eventually, she would exhaust herself, and then…. He would be there. With a sinking sort of dread, she felt it coming. She was flagging already. She wasn’t going to make it. God, she wasn’t going to make it!

Blackwater…awesome!

C.D. Blizzard’s writing skill so successfully drew me into the story that I forgot I was reading a book, which is something no other author has achieved for me. The characters are so strongly imprinted in my memory that I will never forget them. All of my five, and maybe six, senses were fully engaged. I can still smell the horse, see its long eyelashes, hear its soft nicker. I can still picture Cotton’s one-of-a-kind truck, and the barn, too. What mysterious secrets lurked in its cool, dim-lit interior? I can sense Tank’s hatred of the man: Cotton. I taste Mikey’s Fresca, feel the chocolate of the Moon-Pie melting in my own fingers, and smell the fear oozing out of Jimbo’s pores as he sits next to me. I experience the jealousy and the joy of being near Shelby. Even Aunt Ruthie, Cotton’s wife, touches my sympathy in her humble acceptance of her lot in life. I can hear Cotton’s demonic cackle, ringing out across the lake above the roar of the Lycoming. My stomach lurches at the memory of that dark night’s wild ride on the lake in the airboat, as they tried to escape the law. Cotton demanded maneuvers of that airboat no ordinary mortal would dare try. I can feel my fingers clutching the seat so tight–hanging on for dear life–that my hands seem locked there. And then there is the Blackwater itself, that broad and wonderous river, lazily flowing along with a tide all its own. I still have a sharp vision of climbing up into the long abandoned lighthouse keeper’s domain, perched up on steel pilings like a big bird at the mouth of the river, and gazing out across a lake so huge the opposite shore is invisible. Who can forget discovering that Cotton has Mikey fishing on that lake right up next to an active military bombing range, illegal fishing at that. I thought my soul would leap out of my body and fly away right then and there. Yes, even the Blackwater has a character, strong and compelling, making one desire to be on it or near it, savoring its vast wildlife riches forever. There’s so much more to this book. Incredible. I became Mikey, the boy and the man. I experienced everything he experienced. I felt the trauma of the event that literally slammed him out of his boyhood and into manhood, changing him forever. Give me more, more, more from C. D. Blizzard. If you want the ride of your life, read this book! You’ll get it, in more ways than one. Signed, S. K. Van, reader enthusiast.

Hands down, Blackwater has gone to the top of my list of all-time favorite books. I was totally caught up in these characters. This is one heck of a good book.

Powerful says it all!

Powerful is the only word to describe both the book and the characters. It does have some punches, but I guarantee it is a book you will not put down and forget. It stays with you! Best seller in the making or I will eat my hat!

Good Book

This is an excellent book. The kid in this book is so alive that I can almost feel him breathing down my neck as I’m reading. And Cotton is a real kick in the pants. Even if you don’t like some things that happen in this story, you will agree that this writer can get the job done in spades.

It’s Wild!

This book is probably not for everyone. But I will say this. I’ve never been more drawn in by a story. This one will be on my shelf,so to speak, for a long time because I’m sure I’ll be reading it again. It’s wild, funny, deadly serious. It’s so many things rolled into one. I cannot recommend it enough.

Best Bang for your Buck

Blackwater is just a plain ole get down, nitty gritty Southern adventure with a serious wallop in the end. I love these characters. They really speak to me. This book is about life, fun, hero-worship, and tragedy. You may not agree with some of Cotton’s quirks, but you will be totally absorbed in these characters. Prepare to be sucked in and live an adventure that will stay with you for a long time to come.

A … ‘MUST’ READ BOOK

I just finished reading this book,and I did not want the story to end!! The author brings the reader into the story, with wonderful detail and lets you get to know the characters. The added humor of a young boy’s thoughts is joyously funny and well written. This is a ‘must’ read book that should be on everyone’s to do list!

Powerful. That’s the only word I can use to describe this book. C. D. Blizzard knows these characters inside and out and portrays them so well that I felt like I was right there on the scene with them. The airboat ride is a real scream, and if you don’t cringe when Cotton….. Well, I better not give it away. That would take all the fun out of it. I highly recommend this book, but, be warned, it does have some very serious scenes in it.

This is what literature is all about. I was so drawn into the characters that I was there, a part of the story. This story moved me on every level, and the characters are so well developed that they live and breathe. This author definitely has my attention.
